Perth Glory defender Bas van den Brink continues to build on his cult hero status following his performance and post-match comments on Fox Sports.

Perth Glory defender Bas van den Brink continues to build on his cult hero status following his performance and post-match comments on Fox Sports.

Van den Brink was wrongly given a penalty against when he clearly won the ball in a contest with Melbourne striker Archie Thompson.

But instead of blaming the official in a post-match media interview straight after the match, van den Brink said this on the Fox Sports coverage:

“Yeah, I thought it wasn-t a penalty but maybe from where Chris Beath (the referee) was standing maybe he thought it was a penalty.

“We discussed it during the game and he said “I might have been wrong” and I said “well that happens”, he-s human.

“Obviously I couldn-t agree with him (the referee) giving the penalty but he can make a mistake, I make hundreds of mistakes during a game so it happens. It-s part of the game I think.”

Van den Brink has been hailed for his sportsman like comments from leading officials across the country.
