With only four games left in the season Perth Glory Women Coach Bobby Despotovski has not ruled out the prospect of taking his team to this year’s Westfield W-League finals series.
The team heads to Victoria this weekend to take on glamour club Melbourne City, who have carved a healthy eight-point buffer at the top of the table.
After a 4-2 loss at home against Sydney FC, securing every possible point has become vital for the women from the west.
“City are going to be tough to beat, there’s no doubt about that. They are the best team in the league and the ladder doesn’t lie,” Despotovski said.
“We’re disappointed with Sunday’s result. We took the early lead and we ended up giving up four goals. That just can’t happen if you’re professional.
“We’ve got some individuals in the group who know what it takes to be a winner and champions and they need to lead and show the rest how it’s done,” Despotovski said.
To make matters worse young defender Sarah Carroll, who had been sidelined for the past two months with a broken toe, will miss the rest of the season after tearing her quad at training earlier this week.
“It’s disappointing and heartbreaking for Sarah,” Despotovski said.
“It happened at training, as she went to sprint and bang, so she’s out. It’s unfortunate but we can’t do anything about that.
“We just have to try and do our best and play to win.”
However Carla Bennett is set to return from injury after sustaining a fractured wrist.
Kick-off is at 1pm at CB Smith Reserve in Melbourne.
Glory returns home to Ashfield Reserve on Saturday January 2, against Canberra United.
