ALW Match Report: Glory fightback comes up just short as Jets claim points

Glory’s search for a first away win of the Ninja A-League season goes on after Newcastle Jets edged home 2-1 in Saturday’s Round 17 clash at No.2 Sportsground.

Stephen Peters’ side gave themselves a mountain to climb after Sophie Hoban bagged a brace for the hosts inside the opening three minutes.

To their credit, they rallied in the second half and halved the arrears through a well-taken maiden A-League goal from substitute Ella Lincoln which set up a frantic finale.

But even after the Jets lost key midfielder Libby Copus-Brown to a red card, Glory were unable to break through for a second time and prevent the Jets from securing their fourth win of the season.

The result means the WA side remain nine points outside the top six with six games remaining.

Some fans were still finding their seats when Newcastle hit the front, Hoban’s deep cross from the right eluding everyone in a crowded box and finding its way into the top corner of the net.

And Glory were still reeling from that setback when Hoban struck again, this time steering the loose ball home after Templeman had palmed Josie Allan’s low cross into her path.

Allan teed Hoban up for another fine chance on 20 minutes, but the Newcastle midfielder was unable to take it and the visitors reacted to that let-off by forcing their way back into the game, at least in terms of territory and possession, during the latter stages of the opening period.

Glory continued to look the more purposeful of the two sides immediately after the restart and earned their reward just shy of the hour-mark when Izzy Foletta crossed from the right and Lincoln showed a true striker’s instincts to get in front of her marker and poke the ball past Danielle Krzyzaniak.

Templeman was then called upon to tip away a fine effort from Lauren Allan as Newcastle attempted to restore their two-goal buffer almost immediately, but from there on in, it was Glory in the ascendancy.

Their cause received a boost 20 minutes from time when, as the last defender, Copus-Brown hauled down Wynne and was dismissed and Sarah O’Donoghue came within centimetres of making it 2-2 from the resulting free-kick as her strike flew just over the bar.

Debutant Hollie Palmer also threatened with a 25m effort and the Jets were camped in and around their own box for much of the final stages.

But Ryan Campbell’s side dug deep, got numbers behind the ball and ultimately succeeded in avenging their defeat at HBF Park back in Round 2.
