The 27-year-old midfielder found the net in the shadows of half-time after Gabby Hollar had pounced upon an under-hit backpass and pulled the ball across the top of the box.

Glory had earlier been denied by the woodwork as Sally James deflected a Sarah O’Donoghue shot onto the post and the midfielder saw another effort cannon back out off the other upright in first-half stoppage-time.

United rallied after the break, however and restored parity 20 minutes from time via a long-range strike from Mary Stanic-Floody.

Glory – Canberra games have established a reputation for drama and goals over the years and once a relatively quiet opening 15 minutes had passed, that trend looked set to continue as the chances started to flow.

Stephen Peters’ side came close to opening the scoring when Naomi Chinnama and Gabby Hollar both attempted to stab the ball home after James had spilled a corner and ten minutes later, O’Donoghue muscled her way into the box and thumped a low shot against the post.

Glory were not to be denied four minutes before the interval, however, as Hollar took advantage of some sloppy defending and picked out Dalton whose deflected shot flew past a stranded James.

There was still time in the first half for O’Donoghue to rattle the frame of the goal again and it was Glory who also created the first chance after the break as Grace Johnston sent substitute Morgan Roberts in on goal, but with the angle narrowing, James was again able to make the save.

Tijan McKenna then went close to doubling her side’s lead following a goalmouth scramble, but by this time Canberra were beginning to force their way into the contest and they earned their reward when Stanic-Floody sent a 22m shot arrowing its way past debutant Glory ‘keeper Casey Dumont.

That equaliser looked set to tee up a frantic finale as both sides pushed for the win and yet instead, with the hot conditions beginning to take their toll, there were to be no further chances of note at either end.
