ALW Match Preview: Glory ready to be a “real nuisance” in clash with in-form Adelaide

Glory ALW Head Coach Stephen Peters is backing his charges to play the role of disruptors in Friday’s Ninja A-League Round 15 showdown with in-form Adelaide United at Coopers Stadium (kick-off at 1:50pm WST, watch live and FREE on 10Play).

The Reds have surged to third place in the table having lost just once once in their last seven games, but they came off second-best when they visited the Sam Kerr Football Centre back in Round 6.

And Peters believes a similar performance on Friday would give his side a decent chance of making it a season double.

“After that game, their Head Coach Adrian Stenta shook my hand and said “See you in Adelaide’, so I think he may have put a circle on the calendar there!” he said.

“We were extremely tough when we played them last time, so I think they would have prepared for that.

“[They have] Home advantage at Coopers and they’re on a bit of a roll, so we know what’s coming and we have to be ready for it.

“We’re quietly confident that we can be a real nuisance.”

The Coopers Stadium clash is Glory’s second consecutive game on the road and the Head Coach feels they need to be more ruthless than they were in last weekend’s 1-0 defeat against Canberra United at McKellar Park.

“When we’re on top in a game, we’ve got to take that moment,” he said.

“We didn’t; we left the door ajar for them and they got the goal from the corner… and that was pretty frustrating.

“If you don’t take your chances in this league, you’re not going to win your matches.

“We need to understand that.”

In terms of squad news, meanwhile, Peters provided an update on Kelli Brown, Gabby Hollar, Georgia Cassidy, Susan Phonsongkham and Caitlin Doeglas.

“Kelli will get some minutes this week which will be great for her,” he said.

“Georgia has a 2b quad tear which will keep her out for eight weeks and unfortunately Gabby Hollar has a series of blood clots, which is super random.

“She’s on medication which is keeping her out from flying and unfortunately playing.

“Susan’s hoping to be involved in the last three games of the season and she’s on track to do that.

“Caitlin has only got probably two games left with us due to her work as a teacher, which is disappointing, but she’s done great.

“Her return has been a real positive and changed the narrative around what her memories of Glory are in terms of ending on a good note and hopefully we can have a spot for her next season… we’d obviously have to see what that looks like with her work, but I’m hopeful we’ll be able to get her back.”

Glory will be out to snap a seven-game winless streak in the South Australian capital which stretches back to 2016, but will be up against a United side brimming with confidence.

The hosts’ two most recent victories have come away at Brisbane Roar and Sydney FC and they have only failed to score in one game thus far this term.

Emily Condon and Fiona Worts have done most of the damage up front, scoring 13 goals between them, while Chelsie Dawber has claimed five from only eight starts.

Goalkeeper Claudia Jenkins has also caught the eye at the other end of the pitch, keeping five clean sheets and blocking 54 of the 72 shots she has faced for a save percentage of 75.
