ALW Match Preview: Consistency the key for Peters as Glory target back-to-back wins

Head Coach Stephen Peters has called for greater consistency in all areas of performance as Glory look to secure a first away win of the campaign against Western Sydney Wanderers on Friday (kick-off at 4pm WST, watch live and FREE on 10Play).

The women in purple will head to Wanderers Park buoyed by Sunday’s rousing 3-1 victory over Adelaide United at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.

And Peters has called upon his charges to maintain and lift the standards they set in that clash with the Reds.

“We’ve just got to find some consistency now,” he said.

“It was a good performance, but it won’t mean much if we drop our guard and put in a rubbish performance this week.

“We definitely want to try and replicate the same type of application and effort against a team that just had a very good win.

“It’s about growing each week and the consistency aspect is what we’ve been drumming into the players this week.

“The things we’ve done well, we want to get addicted to those things and keep doing them.

“We don’t want to get complacent and go away from the things that are working for us.”

Glory currently sit just two points outside the top four in what is a remarkably congested ALW ladder and the Head Coach is keenly aware of how significant a victory over Wanderers could prove to be.

“Back-to-back wins in this competition is a huge thing,” he said.

“You’ve seen how tight the table is, so if we can back it up and climb the table, that would be brilliant for us.

“To stay with the pack would be huge.

“To climb the table is massive and different pressures come with that.

“We’ve got to be ready for both of those pressures, but the mood in the camp is very good.”

The hosts will come into the game having secured their first win of the season last weekend by trouncing Western United 5-1.

But Peters is not unduly fazed by that spectacular result.

“I actually think we’re coming up against them at a good time because that win obviously was a huge performance for them and they were very hungry in that particular game, but can they replicate that hunger?” he said.

“We’re going to find that out.

“I think it’s a good time to play them and we’re certainly not afraid of any team in the competition.

“We’re going to go there and try and make a nuisance of ourselves.”

On the injury front, meanwhile, Peters confirmed that midfield duo Sarah O’Donoghue (ankle) and Izzy Dalton (hamstring) will be missing once again on Friday.

“It’s looking like six weeks [for O’Donoghue], which is a massive blow for her because her growth in such a short space of time has been huge for the team and for her personally,” he said.

“We’re all feeling for her, but young Charli [Wainwright] came in and did a great job at the weekend and it was nice to see a local Perth girl getting an opportunity and grabbing it with both hands.

“Izzy’s hammy is still a little bit tender, so I don’t think we’ll risk it.

“We’ve got to focus one game at a time, but also look a little bit ahead and make sure you’re not throwing all your eggs in one basket.

“We’ll probably manage her this week.”

Prior to last weekend’s big win over Western United, Wanderers had failed to score in four consecutive defeats to Adelaide United, Sydney FC, Brisbane Roar and Melbourne City respectively, while on opening day, they fought out a 2-2 away draw with Newcastle Jets.

Teenage forward Sienna Saveska has been one of their shining lights thus far, scoring four times, while Cushla Rue and Sophie Harding both have a goal and an assist to their names.

Glory have lost on each of their last three away clashes with the red-and-blacks, but have won 10 of the 20 overall clashes between the two sides, with Wanderers securing maximum points on nine occasions and just one meeting ending all square.
