Retro Corner – The little Brazilian who made a big impression

Thumbnail

A little bit over the howling wind and driving rain that has engulfed Perth this week?

Then let us bring a dash of Brazilian warmth into your life as we climb aboard the nostalgia train for a cosy reminisce about Andrezinho!

The bare facts are that he made 25 appearances for the club during the run to the 2012 Hyundai A-League Grand Final, 13 of which were starts and he scored two goals along the way, both of which came against Melbourne Victory.

And then as suddenly as he’d arrived, he was gone; off to continue a wide-ranging career that would duly see him ply his trade in Greece, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Oman, India, his native Brazil and most recently, Melbourne, where he has been turning out for Preston Lions in the Victorian State League Division One.

But for someone who spent just the one season here in the West, the diminutive winger made quite an impression.

While the quality of the end product sometimes varied, an unmistakable buzz nonetheless went around the ground whenever Andrezinho received the ball at his feet with space to run into.

An impressive turn of pace and similarly quick feet made him a difficult man to defend against and if he was guilty of throwing in one too many step-overs every now and then, most Glory fans seemed happy to forgive him.

Injury sadly prevented him from featuring in the ill-fated Grand Final against Brisbane Roar, but he captured plenty of hearts during his brief spell in purple and we’d love to get your memories of him.
