Perth Glory midfielder Victor Sikora says it will be a more determined West Australian outfit which steps onto the pitch this weekend after a disappointing performance to start their campaign.
Sikora says the club was left to rue a slow start in the 1-0 loss to Adelaide at Hindmarsh Stadium, and despite a dubious penalty leading to the Red-s goal, the straight shooting Dutchman felt it was Perth-s inability to create chances on goal which cost them the points.
“We only had one shot on goal the whole game, so we have to improve,” said Sikora.
“I think everyone was disappointed with their performance on Friday and we can do much better but it will be fine.”
Sikora believes it won-t take long for the club-s influx of new talent to settle into a rhythm of playing alongside each other and subtle changes had already been made to the system of play to accommodate the various strengths of the squad.
“It was not so good on our side but were still, I think, getting used to fitting the guys in and the second half was good, we saw a little of our shape but we can do much better than that,” said Sikora.
Drafted in to play the final five matches of last season as a replacement player Sikora has enjoyed being part of the pre-season build-up and is determined to make it a memorable campaign for the club.
“It-s only the first game and there are 26 rounds to go so I-m not worried,” he said.
Perth travel to Wellington for a Sunday clash against the Phoenix and Sikora says only three points will do.
“I don-t care how we play as long as we-re winning. We have to win, we have to come back with three points,” Sikora said.
“We will be very disappointed if we don-t get three points. We said to each other we want four points in the two away games to start and then come home and get a big crowd for that game.
“As long as we get three points (against Wellington) I-m happy.”
Glory will fly out on Friday and are scheduled to train in New Zealand on Saturday before a Sunday afternoon clash with the Phoenix. It will be a tough assignment for Perth against a Wellington side looking for their first points also following a 3-2 loss against Newcastle in round one.
Perth play their first home match of the season in round three when Newcastle come to ME Bank Stadium on Sunday, 23 August.
