Edwards was appointed on a three-year contract, five weeks after stepping into the role in an interim capacity to replace former Head Coach Ian Ferguson.
FFA granted Edwards unpaid leave from his roles as Assistant National Technical Director and Head Coach of the Qantas Joeys in February and he has now tendered his resignation.
FFA CEO David Gallop has welcomed the appointment of another home-grown and locally-educated coach in the Hyundai A-League as a positive sign of Australia’s technical development.
“Alistair was an astute Assistant National Technical Director and carefully nurtured young players with the Joeys. He made a significant contribution in three years with FFA,” said Gallop.
“That knowledge and commitment will now benefit Perth Glory and Alistair goes with our best wishes.
“I’m pleased that Glory will have a Perth boy in charge. Football clubs exist to represent the people of a city or region and Alistair’s local links can only help the Glory deepen their connections with the WA football community.”
FFA National Technical Director Han Berger said he’s sure Edwards will do a fantastic job for Perth Glory.
“Alistair has made a significant contribution to football in this country including playing an important role in setting up the National Curriculum which we first launched in 2009,” said Berger.
“His support to me when learning the Australian football culture was invaluable and he has proven himself consistently in the development of young players.
“Developing Australian coaches is a top priority and I congratulate Alistair on his appointment as Head Coach of Perth Glory and look forward to seeing him take up this new challenge to further develop football in Western Australia.”
Sydney FC Westfield W-League coach, Alen Stajcic, will continue as Interim Assistant National Technical Director, a role he has been in since the departure of Edwards in February.
