Joondalup United proved too strong for a young Perth Glory side, running out 4-1 winners in the Week 16 PS4 National Premier League WA at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
It was a perfect start for the Glory, dominating and they were ahead after only 10 minutes, with Bayley Brown-Montgomery scoring, and they had chances to increase their lead.
But Alex Wild equalised 10 minutes later and late first half goals from Anthony Taylor and Josh Booysen, and a second half goal from substitute Luke Serra, wrapped up their win, but the woodwork came to the home side’s rescue on four occasions.
Glory Coach John Gibson said it was another solid performance, but errors let Joondalup back in the game.
“We made a fantastic start, played some good football and created super chances that we didn’t capitalise on, but three costly errors by us let them back in the game,” Gibson said.
“Joondalup were ruthless on our errors and this was another fantastic/tough learning moment for us. This period cost us three goals in ten minutes, which was really disappointing.”
Gibson said it’s an extremely hard learning curve for the young player group, and they will be better for it.
“Joondalup United are very good at what they do, we certainly prepared as well as with could, but we need to learn from our mistakes, and we will,” he said.
“The group is constantly evolving with the demands of senior football, and our preparation has already started to the challenge of Balcatta next weekend.”
Skipper Daniel Stynes said they need to cut out silly mistakes that are costing them.
“Unfortunately it was another day to forget, but I thought the performance and chances we created were much improved, it was just individual mistakes what cost us on the day,” he said.
“We got into some good areas, and we hit the woodwork four times, but there’s plenty to improve on, but also a lot of positive signs from a very young team.”
Gibson made just the one change to the side that were beaten at Floreat Athena last week, With Kyle McDonald coming in to replace Jackson Lee in goal, while 16-year-old Ciaran Miller was the keeper on the bench.
The home side went close early, Richard Howles, who bagged four goals the last time we met, saw his shot crash off the crossbar on eight minutes.
But two minutes later the Glory hit back and took the lead, Brown-Montgomery lost his marker in the penalty area and fired past James Bosdet.
It could have been 2-0 moments later, Brown-Montgomery forcing Bosdet into a good save from long-range, before Cameron Murray’s cross was only inches away from striker Michael Domfeh’s outstretched leg at the back post.
But on 19 minutes, and against the run of play, Joondalup levelled. Good work on the left by Howles ended with a ball into the box, and Wild turned it home.
The Glory youngsters fought back, and the lively Brown-Montgomery lob beat Bosdet, but the crossbar came to the rescue of the Joondalup custodian.
Glory keeper McDonald then produce a great save to thwart Rowdy Yates on 26 minutes, but two minutes later the home side hit the front, in unfortunate circumstances.
There looked little danger when Taylor’s cross-shot came into the area, but it floated over a stranded McDonald and into the net.
Things got worse for the Glory, and four minutes later Joondalup added a third, Guy McDonald cross fell kindly to Booysen, who made no mistake.
The Glory pressed late, Domfeh’s shot flashed wide of the post, but at the break, the home side led 3-1.
Domfeh was a real handful after the break, and he went close early, his shot was saved low by Bosdet, before Stynes’ bullet from 25-yards crashed off the crossbar.
Luck wasn’t going the Glory’s way, and after creating and missing their chances Joondalup rubbed salt into the wounds by adding a fourth 12 minutes from time. Yates’ corner picked out Serra, who headed home.
The woodwork then denied Stynes again moments later, before the Glory skipper saw a shot from the edge of the box whistled past the post – it wasn’t the Glory’s day.
There was better news in other games on Saturday. Callum Salmon’s under 18’s won 9-0, with Adam Zimarino and Ciaran Bramwell both scoring hat-tricks, with Dylan Leonard scoring twice and Trent Ostler the other.
Meanwhile, Anthony Cochrane’s under 20’s were also winners, with Bleron Mamudi, Aston Junna and Charlie Watt on target in a 3-0 win.
