Perth Glory is delighted to confirm that exciting young defender Sakura Leong has signed a scholarship contract with the club.
The 17-year-old trained extensively with Glory’s ALW squad last year before enjoying a standout season for Hyundai NTC in the NPLW WA, which included taking out the Goal of the Week Award in Round One.
Those performances earned the Perth local a call-up to the Junior Matildas squad for this month’s domestic training camp and she is understandably excited at what lies ahead.
“Being from Perth, I’ve always supported Perth Glory and training with the team and Head Coach Stephen Peters last season feels like a natural progression,” she said.
“Being with Glory will also complement my part in the Junior Matildas squad as we prepare for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco in October.
“Individually, I hope to be a regular part of the playing squad and use my speed and versatility to push the ball forward as a fullback.
“As a group, I know a lot of the girls from last season and they’re a fantastic squad to be around.
“If we continue to put in the hard work, I feel that making the top six is very achievable.”
Glory Football Director Stan Lazaridis, meanwhile, believes that Leong is a player with huge potential.
“Sakura really impressed everyone when she came in to train with us last season and we’re very pleased to have now signed her,” he said.
“She’s an excellent technical player and a very modern full-back, who is quick, strong and keen to get forward and attack whenever possible.
“There is no doubt in my mind that Sakura has a very high ceiling as a player and we’re looking forward to helping her continue her development in the coming season.”
