ALM Match Report: Spectacular Kucharski double sends Glory into top four

Jaiden Kucharski scored two spectacular goals either side of half-time to ease Glory to a 2-1 victory over Newcastle Jets at a raucous HBF Park on Saturday evening.

Having opened his account for the season in last weekend’s 4-0 home win over Adelaide United, the 24-year-old put Glory ahead with a thumping drive from outside the box six minutes before the break.

He then repeated the feat three minutes into the second half, this time reversing a shot into the bottom corner, again from outside the box.

The Jets did manage to pull one back in stoppage-time, courtesy of Nikos Vergos, but Glory were not to be denied a deserved win which propels them into fourth spot in the table.

After a largely quiet opening 15 minutes, the chances began to flow and only a spectacular double save from Daniel Solsky prevented the visitors from hitting the front, the young Glory ‘keeper tipping a Max Burgess header onto the bar and then blocking Pat Wood’s follow-up at point-blank range.

Seb Despotovski duly squandered a decent chance at the other end after being played in by Kucharski, but Adam Griffiths’ side were not to be denied for long.

After the Jets conceded possession some 30 metres out from their own goal, Kucharski managed to find a pocket of space on the edge of the box and with minimum backlift, thundered an unstoppable shot into the top corner.

And Kucharski was back at it again almost immediately after the restart, this time shrugging off the attentions of Burgess before hammering a low shot past James Delianov in the Newcastle goal from 20 metres out.

That goal seemed to take the wind completely out of the Jets’ sails and it was not until the 80th minutes that they seriously threatened to find a way back into the game as substitute Will Dobson fired over from right in front.

Mark Milligan’s side did eventually find a way through Glory’s disciplined defence via a tap-in from a suspiciously offside-looking Vergos, but it came far too late in the piece to deny the men in purple another vital victory.
