The PGFC Academy First Team ended their 2024 NPL WA Night Series Group B campaign off in style on Friday evening, downing Floreat Athena 4-2 at Frank Drago Reserve.
Needing three points to retain any chance of landing a place in the semi-finals, John Walmsley’s side began brightly and went into half-time 2-0 up courtesy of efforts from Samuel Barry and Malise Mpunga.
The early stages of the second half then witnessed a flurry of goals at either end as Nick Ambrogio pulled one back for Athena, GJ Prinsloo restored Glory’s two-goal advantage and Ethan Mom halved it once again just sixty seconds later.
The Academy side eventually made the game safe ten minutes from time when Santiago Flores struck to make it 4-2.
That result meant that a draw between Stirling Macedonia and Perth SC on Sunday would see Glory progress to the semis, but it was not to be as Stirling secured a 2-0 win to go through as runners-up to group winners Bayswater City.
With a very young group displaying an impressive rate of improvement as the tournament went on, securing seven points from their final three games, there were plenty of positives for Walmsley and his staff to build upon ahead of the regular NPL WA campaign which gets underway on Saturday 16 March.
