Young ALM midfielder Freney signs contract extension

Perth Glory is delighted to confirm that 19-year-old midfielder Will Freney has signed a two-year contract extension with the club.

During what was his breakthrough season at senior level last year, the Australia Under-18 and Under-19 international made his A-League debut in the Round 9 victory over Brisbane Roar and went on to chalk up a further 10 appearances, seven of which were starts.

Glory Football Director Stan Lazaridis believes that Freney has the potential to establish himself as a midfield mainstay for the club over the next two years.

“Will was given an opportunity at senior level last season and he took it,” he said.

“He became a regular member of the squad during the second half of the season and impressed us with the way he adapted to the demands of A-League football.

“We are now excited to see him continue his development at Glory in the coming seasons.”

Freney himself is thrilled at the prospect of continuing his career in the famous purple.

“Last season was my first year in professional football, which was really exciting,” he said, “and I feel like I learned and grew so much as a player, putting me in the best spot going into next season.

“The direction the club is moving in makes me excited to be a part of it.

“I feel like the philosophy and brand of football that the coaching staff are trying to instill in us suits me as a player and that the environment and team that is being created will really help me grow as a player and a person.

“I’ve been in Perth for two years now and it’s already starting to feel like home.

“I love playing at HBF Park and seeing all of our great fans turn up in numbers every week.

“Going into next season, my aim is to build on how I finished last year.

“I feel like I finished the season really well and I just want to keep improving and be a part of the solution to help the club move up the table, like our fans deserve.”

Further squad announcements will be made shortly.
