Ella Lincoln scored twice and Baxter Thew also found the net as Glory regained the Challenge Cup with a 4-2 victory over the WA State Team at Kingsway Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
In a competitive clash played out in persistent rain, Glory raced out to a 2-0 lead inside the opening 16 minutes courtesy as Thew fired in from a corner and an Ella Abdul Massih shot was deflected in for an own goal.
Caitlin Doeglas duly hauled the State Team back into it almost immediately, only for Lincoln to restore Glory’s two-goal advantage on the half-hour.
Lincoln proceeded to claim her side’s fourth early in the second half and although Jess Flannery reduced the arrears to keep the State side in it, Glory were not to be denied revenge for their defeat in last year’s corresponding fixture.
As the rain began to fall in earnest in the northern suburbs, Glory wasted no time in getting into their stride and found the game’s opening goal just 12 minutes in.
The WA defence were unable to deal with an Emma Tovar corner from the right and eventually the ball fell kindly for Thew who gleefully fired into the net.
1-0 became 2-0 moments later as Abdul Massih drove into the box and her shot was deflected in via a cluster of State Team defenders.
To their credit, however, WA responded well to those early setbacks and soon halved the arrears via a fine goal from former Glory striker Doeglas who chipped home from outside the box.
Even though the rain continued to intensify, the action was unaffected and the fourth goal of a very lively first half-hour went Glory’s way.
This time Thew played Lincoln in with a fine through ball and the livewire forward showed great pace to get in behind, followed by impressive composure to pick out the bottom corner.
Lincoln, who was a thorn in WA’s side throughout, struck again shortly after the restart, this time bringing the ball down well in the box and applying a clinical finish.
As they had in the first half, however, the valiant State Team clawed their way back into the contest when Flannery forced home an inviting cross delivered with pinpoint accuracy by Doeglas.
Both sides then proceeded to make a raft of substitutions which inevitably took their toll on the flow of the game and the chances dried up somewhat at both ends in the final half hour.
But although Glory were not able to add any further gloss to the scoreline, Head Coach Stephen Peters will have been pleased with much of what his side produced in what was an ideal final hit-out ahead of next Saturday’s season-opener away at Newcastle Jets.
