Perth Glory FC head east to take on fellow A-League team, Newcastle Jets in tomorrow night’s Westfied FFA Cup Round of 32 match at Magic Park which kicks off at 5:30pm AWST.
Glory have an enviable record in the A-League against the Jets, winning 16 of the 27 matches played over the past 9 seasons and including 2 wins and a draw in last season’s Hyundai A-League. Tomorrow night Glory will be looking for much of the same in the Club’s first outing, on their debut, in the Westfield FFA Cup competition.
Following on from the strong performance in the 1-1 draw in the LFP World Challenge match against La Liga side, Malaga CF, at nib Stadium last week, Coach, Kenny Lowe, will travel to Newcastle with a much changed and much strengthened team from last season.
A travelling party of 16 has been named, with five of Glory’s new signings, Dino Djulbic, Richard Garcia, Diogo Ferreira, Andy Keogh and Mitch Nichols all included and likely to figure from the outset. Joining them for the trip to Newcastle is Danny Vukovic, Jack Clisby, Brandon O’Neil, Nebojsa Marinkovic, Chris Harold, Jamie Maclaren, Sidnei Sciola, Jack Duncan, Josh Risdon, Scott Jamieson and Riley Woodcock.
Not included in the squad to face the Newcastle Jets are Michael Thwaite, and new signing, Youssouf Hersi, who are unavailable for selection due to their inclusion in the Foxtel A-League All Stars team who will play Juventus next Sunday. Goalkeeper, Jordan Thurtell, who signed from the Australian Institute of Sport, and AS Roma bound, Danny DeSilva, are also excluded due to Young Socceroos commitments. Matt Davies, Cameron Edwards, Rostyn Griffiths and former Newcastle Jets skipper, Ruben Zadkovich, are also out, all due to injury.
The match will be Head Coach, Kenny Lowe’s first competitive game since his full time appointment in April 2014, and he will be looking for a positive start to the Club’s FFA Cup campaign, after an already very intensive first 6 weeks of the pre-season programme gone. With the majority of Glory’s squad now finalised, the competition for starting positions for this season will be as fierce as ever, with many of the Club’s new signings looking to impress and secure their spot.
Newcastle Jets will also be fielding a new look side after a major turnover of players, losing no less than 12 of their squad from last season, let alone a complete revamp of the coaching staff. West Australian, and last year’s A-League Golden Boot winner, Adam Taggart, has left for the UK, whilst Josh Brillante has headed to Italy. New coach, Phil Stubbins, is likely to give several of his 8 off season signings at the Jets, debuts in this match, although Socceroo Goalkeeper, Mark Birighitti, will be missing after his selection in the All Stars squad.
