Sterj set for start

Glory marquee Mile Sterjovski will be pressing to reclaim a starting berth when the side tackles Central Coast on Friday after overcoming a stomach bug that sapped his energy before last week-s 2-0 win against Sydney.

The decision by Coach Dave Mitchell not to start the Socceroo, in a bid to ensure his influence at the business end of the match, proved a masterstroke. Sterjovski played a critical role after being thrust into the fray following the main break and turned the contest in Perth-s favour.

With another week to rebuild his energy stocks Sterjovski is confident of playing an even bigger role against the Mariners at Bluetongue Stadium.

“I’m pretty confident I’ll be able to play the 90 minutes,” Sterjovski said.

“Last match I felt like my energy levels were ok but they weren-t as good as they could be. I thought it was a good idea to use me off the bench.

“I had a pretty rough week but I started to come good Thursday and I got the energy levels up,” Sterjovski said. “I was fortunate enough to be in the squad in the end.”

Sunday-s win coming on the back of a resilient performance in Wellington where Perth earned a hard fought draw and Sterjovski said the side will take confidence to Gosford against an in-form Central Coast outfit.

“It was really important that we won that game and we are looking forward to Central Coast,” he said

“It was very important. If we lost that one we could’ve been a bit further back and way off the pace.

“To win that and to be back in it now, hopefully we can get a few more wins on the trot and be right up there,” he added.
