With the 2017-18 Hyundai A-League season launch almost upon us, we thought we’d have a flick through the picture archives and see how upcoming new campaigns have been promoted in the past.
And this shot from 1999 jumped out at us.
Why?
Well, firstly, there’s the beautiful backdrop of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Secondly, there’s that extremely cheeky grin plastered across the face of our very own Vinko Buljubasic.
And thirdly, it gives us a chance to marvel at the generosity shown by Manchester United in seemingly lending their entire kit to Wollongong Wolves!
There’s also the fact that half the teams that were to compete in the NSL that season aren’t actually epresented in the picture, with the likes of Canberra Cosmos, Brisbane Strikers and Northern Spirit apparently either failing to send their respective captains or perhaps not being asked to.
The 1999-2000 campaign did, of course, end with Glory being defeated in the infamous ‘unlosable’ Grand Final against the Wolves having previously been crowned minor premiers.
But rather than dwell upon that astonishing afternoon at Subiaco Oval, we’ve opted to focus on the picture instead and pose the question, can you name all the skippers?
We’ve name-checked Vinko already, so there are only seven more to get and in terms of a clue, a couple of them have very strong Glory connections.
If you can name all seven, we’ll see if we can rustle up a prize that meets the standards that we’ve set in our previous Retro Corner comps.
(So expect something along the lines of a picture of Ron Smith walking his dog through Bold Park, or Naum Sekulovski playing snooker.)
