First up, we acknowledge that only going as far back as 2014 is really stretching the concept of ‘retro’.
But, in our defence, with Wanderers only coming into existence in 2012, our options were a bit limited when it came to producing an historical feature to segue into Sunday’s trip to Spotless Stadium.
So with that disclaimer in place, let’s explore why we opted for this picture and this game.
Australia Day 2014 was the date, Pirtek Stadium in Parramatta the venue and as was very often the case when Glory met Wanderers during the red-and-blacks’ early years, it didn’t end well for the WA side.
Brendon Santalab, Aaron Mooy and Shannon Cole all scored for the hosts in a 3-1 win, with Shane Smeltz replying for the visitors.
But it’s the line-ups rather than the result that really jumps out from this Round 16 fixture.
How many players from the 32 named in the combined matchday squads do you think had already played for both clubs or were destined to do so in the future?
3 or 4? 5 or 6? Try 10!
That’s right; if ever one snapshot can illustrate the close connections that have been forged between Wanderers and Glory over the years, this game is it.
Now you could just cheat and look the game up, but if you can resist that temptation, how about trying to name the ten players in question?
We’ll give you three to get you underway – Ante Covic, Dean Heffernan and Matt Spiranovic.
