Our recent trip back to 1995 and the WA State Team’s clash with Nottingham Forest seemed to evoke some fond memories for a number of Glory fans.
So this week we’ve decided to go one year further back to revisit another clash with a visiting English side.
Sheffield United were the tourists on this occasion, freshly relegated from the top flight and looking to bounce back under the stewardship of the wily Dave Bassett who had managed to retain his position despite the drop down to what was then known as Division One.
A week after taking on WA, the Blades would battle out a 1-1 draw with the Olyroos in a game played, rather bizarrely, at Seagulls Stadium in the northern New South Wales town of Tweed Heads (population 8,000).
And there were future Glory connections aplenty in that game with Frank Juric, Brad Hassell and Vinko Buljubasic all donning the green and gold.
But getting back to the showdown at the WACA on May 13th, what caught our eye was the sheer quality of the WA line-up.
From Stan Lazaridis and the Naven brothers, to Bobby Despotovski, Troy Halpin and future-Blade Shaun Murphy, this was some squad, even if they were ultimately unable to get over the top of the Yorkshiremen who ran out 2-1 winners to claim the Quit International Trophy.
As always, we’d love to get your memories of what was surely another step along the path to the formation of Glory a year or so later, so join the conversation via Twitter or on our Facebook page.
(And if anyone has visited Seagulls Stadium, we’d love to hear about that too!)
