The PGFC Academy senior teams enjoyed contrasting fortunes in their NPL WA fixtures against Perth RedStar on Saturday, with the Under-20s securing a thumping 6-0 win, but the First Team being edged out 2-1 and the Under-18s going down 4-0.
The 20s’ dominant performance cemented their position at the top of the table, with Santiago Flores taking centre-stage as he helped himself to a hat-trick.
Louis Sollitt also found the net to take his tally for the season to 14, with Hayden Thomas and Sean O’Connor completing the scoring.
A fourth defeat of the season for the 18s, meanwhile, saw them lose ground in the title race, although they remain just three points behind current leaders Perth SC whom they are scheduled to meet in the last round of the regular season.
That final-day trip to Dorrien Gardens could also be a crucial one for the First Team who were unable to improve their ladder position as they were edged out by a RedStar side which needed three points to keep its title challenge alive.
They fell behind right at the end of an evenly-fought first half when a deep corner reached Blair Govan and he hooked a shot into the corner of the net.
Adam Bugarija, one of a number of A-League squad players who were added to the First Team squad on the day, then drew the visitors level by meeting a Khoa Ngo cutback with a crisp shot which left Liam Reddy helpless in the home goal.
But within sixty seconds, RedStar hit back to claim what proved to be the winner as former Academy midfielder Matt George capitalised upon some hesitant defending and drove home a low shot from just inside the box.
All three teams are on the road again on Saturday (17th August), this time to Macedonia Park to take on Stirling Macedonia.
The Under-18s will get the day’s action underway at 11am, followed by the 20s at 1pm and the First Team at 3pm.
FootballWest has also confirmed that the Under-18s and Under-20s will play their respective catch-up games against Bayswater City at Frank Drago Reserve on Wednesday 28 August at 6.15pm (18s) and 8.15pm (20s).
Do get along and support the lads if you can.
