Perth set for do-or-die clash in Melbourne

Westfield W-League side Perth Glory is preparing for one of its biggest matches this season against Melbourne Victory on Saturday.

A win is vital for the WA side, who sits fourth on the table and gunning for a debut finals appearance this season.

The Glory is also sweating on the clearance of new signing Monnique Kofoed, who could take a spot on the bench against her former side this week.

Kofoed played all 10 games last year for the Victory, but the utility has been on the road to recovery after undergoing a knee reconstruction.

The club and player have agreed to terms and are awaiting final clearance and registration from Football Federation Australia.

“Monnique will meet us in Melbourne and will be a strong chance to play in what is going to be a huge match,” said Perth Glory coach John Gibson.

“She-s been training in Queensland and we-ve kept in regular contact, so I look forward to what she-ll bring to the team as a very flexible player.

“If we play the way we know we can, I have no doubt we can come away with a win and that will put us in good stead with the last few games of the season after the Christmas break.”

Gibson was also quick to heap praise on young star Sam Kerr, who last night took out the Department of Sport and Recreation Junior Sports Star of the Year.

“Winning that award is massive for Sammy, the first footballer to win it,” he said.

“She deserves all the accolades she gets and for her to take out that award in a tough field of other great athletes is just a fantastic achievement.”
