NPL Wrap: Academy First Team battle out draw with Premiers-elect

The PGFC Academy First Team forced Perth RedStar to keep their Premiership champagne on ice by holding the NPL WA leaders to a 0-0 draw at Lark Hill on Saturday.

A goalless stalemate seemed the unlikeliest of outcomes as the league’s two top-scoring sides went head to head and yet that was exactly what unfolded.

It was John Walmsley’s side who created the better chances, with Daniel Bennie and Laat Mathiang both hitting the woodwork, while Glory legend Liam Reddy produced fine saves to keep Jayden Gorman and substitute Khoa Ngo at bay.

The result leaves the First Team in seventh place, while Red Star will be crowned Premiers next weekend even if they lose to Bayswater City, unless second-placed Stirling Macedonia somehow manage to win and overcome a goal-difference deficit of 20.

PGFC Academy First Team Line-Up: 1.Robert COOK (GK), 2.Trent OSTLER (16.Joseph FORDE 46′), 3.Shade STEWART, 4.Kaelan MAJEKODUNMI, 5.Judd MACDOUGALL, 6.Laat MATHIANG, 7.Daniel BENNIE (17.Khoa NGO 61′), 8.Corey SUTHERLAND, 9.Jayden GORMAN (18.James OVERY 61′), 10.Jaylan PEARMAN (21.Giovanni DE ABREU 87′), 11.Joel ANASMO (14.Aiki TSUKAMOTO 61′)

In the day’s other games, goals from Noah Ieraci and Santiago Flores steered the Under-18s to a 2-0 win, while Royie Rahamim was the Under-20s’ scorer in their 3-1 defeat.

All three teams will round off the regular NPL WA season by visiting Floreat Athena on Saturday, with the Under-18s getting underway at 11am, followed by the Under-20s at 1pm and the First Team at 3pm.
