NPL Preview: Academy First Team out to halt RedStar title charge

The PGFC Academy First Team could play the role of party-poopers as they aim to secure the double over Perth RedStar in Saturday’s NPL WA clash at Lark Hill (kick-off at 3pm).

Heading into the penultimate game of the regular season, the table remains incredibly congested, with Glory three points behind fourth-placed Perth SC and yet also only three points clear of bottom-placed Floreat Athena.

RedStar, meanwhile, could clinch the title if they claim maximum points at Lark Hill and second-placed Stirling Macedonia fail to do likewise in their home clash with Perth SC.

The Academy First Team will take on the premiers-elect buoyed by a vital three points collected at Cockburn City last time out, Joel Anasmo, Giordano Colli, Daniel Bennie and James Overy grabbing a goal apiece as they came from behind to run out 4-1 winners.

And John Walmsley’s side can take further heart from the fact that they also came out on top when they visited RedStar back in Round 7, Aiki Tsukamoto and Jayden Gorman both scoring in the final seven minutes to secure an impressive 2-1 victory.

RedStar have lost just twice since then, however and leading scorers Daryl Nicol and Chok Dau have taken their goal tallies to 25 and 15 respectively.

Saturday’s visitors are also likely to include a number of ex-Glory and PGFC Academy players in their squad, including Liam Reddy, Declan Hughes, Riley Warland, Nick Walsh, Gomo Dukuly and the aforementioned Dau.

Ahead of the First Team game, the Under-18s and Under-20s will be in action at 11am and 1pm, with both sides having wrapped up their respective league titles last weekend.

Admission is FREE, so do get along and support the lads if you can.
