Glory midfielder Georgia Cassidy has been named in the Young Matildas squad which will meet for a training camp followed by two games against Aotearoa New Zealand later this month.
Australia are heading to Wellington to take tackle their fellow FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup Colombia 2024 qualifiers on Thursday, 11 July 2024 (10.30am WST) at Jerry Collins Stadium and then again on Sunday, 14 July 2024 (10.30am WST) in a closed doors match at New Zealand Campus of Innovation and Sport (NZCIS).
The two-match series will be used by Head Coach Leah Blayney to prepare her charges for the FIFA U-20 World Cup which will run from 31 August to 22 September in Colombia, with the Aussies set to face the host nation as well as Mexico and Cameroon in Group A.
And Blayney is looking forward to seeing which of her players manage take the opportunity to firm up their places in the World Cup squad.
“As we head into our next phase of preparation,” she said, “it presents a real window to assess and evaluate our team progress as we focus in on the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup 2024.
“A significant portion of this squad has been with us throughout this most current cycle.
“They have a demonstrated ability to perform on the international stage and are currently doing everything in their control to be selected for the upcoming Youth World Cup.
“With two quality matches against Aotearoa New Zealand, our technical team is eager to witness greater fluency in our play as a unit.
“We’ll be looking to build on existing chemistry as well as further encourage our players to continue to play attacking positive entertain football.
“I want them to continue to play brave, positive and entertaining football.”
Cassidy enhanced her growing reputation as one of the most promising young midfielders in the country by featuring 19 times for Glory last season in what was her first year of Liberty A-League football.
After taking out the club’s Women’s Best Youth Player of the Season Award, the 19-year-old has continued to impress while playing for Perth SC in this year’s NPLW WA competition.
