Last chance for glorious finish

Perth Glory women’s tilt at finals football will be decided tomorrow in a blockbuster clash against Canberra United at McKellar Park.

Perth Glory women’s tilt at finals football will be decided tomorrow in a blockbuster clash against Canberra United at McKellar Park.

Three points for Perth will seal a third-placed finish on the Westfield W-League table and book a Semi Final appearance against Brisbane Roar next Saturday at Ballymore Stadium.

If the Glory cannot take the three points, they will need bottom-of-the-table Adelaide United to pull of a huge shock against Melbourne Victory.

Last week saw Perth held to a 1-1 draw by Melbourne, while Canberra lost 3-0 to reigning champions Sydney FC.

Glory defender Carys Hawkins will tomorrow make it 30 consecutive matches for Perth alongside captain Tanya Oxtoby and says she cannot wait for the match to begin.

“It all comes down to tomorrow and essentially we all know what needs to be done,” she said.

“We all were incredibly disappointed with last week-s result against Melbourne and we are very lucky that we have a second chance to still be able to make the finals, as some teams don-t have that luxury.

“I don-t think there-s more pressure on us this week, but we are more focused on the job at hand.

“Canberra is a very good side and it is not going to be an easy match at all.

“Since the 4-1 loss in Round One I think we-ve grown as a team and if we play at our best, we know we can do it.”

Hawkins also says John Gibson-s squad has been the strongest assembled yet.

“Personally, it would be very satisfying for me to play finals and I think with the quality of players we-ve got this season it is a realistic goal whereas in the past we probably haven-t deserved to be in the mix.

“Whoever is good enough on the day will be guaranteed to play finals and if we can-t do it after getting a second chance this week then maybe we don-t deserve to.

Canberra United versus Perth Glory will be broadcast tomorrow on ABC1 from 3pm Perth time.
