Glory ready to ramp things up against Gwelup

Glory resume their pre-season campaign on Wednesday evening when they take on Gwelup Croatia at Dorrien Gardens (kick off 7pm).

Tony Popovic’s men secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Perth SC in their opening friendly last midweek and will be looking to build upon that performance in what will be their last hit-out ahead of Monday’s glamour clash with Chelsea at Optus Stadium.

Gwelup, however, have won 9 of their 12 State League Division One games so far this term in addition to reaching the last 32 of the FFA Cup and Glory’s Football Director Jacob Burns is expecting a competitive contest.

“Gwelup are having an excellent season and have some strong players, so they are ideal opponents as we look to ramp things up,” he said.

“It’s also a point of difference in that we’re playing a State League team rather another NPL side and we’re all looking forward to it.

“From our perspective, it’s another chance for the players to implement what they’ve been working on during training and to continue to improve.

“They’ve been working extremely hard for the past five weeks or so and this game will provide the coaching staff with another opportunity to assess the progress that’s being made.

“It was great to see so many of our members and fans coming out to support the lads at Dorrien Gardens last week and we hope it’ll be the same again on Wednesday.”

In terms of players to look out for within Gwelup’s ranks, meanwhile, midfielder James Sammut is a former Glory youth player, Bobby Wilson provides plenty of strength and experience at the back and former St Johnstone man David Heagney boasts an impressive goalscoring record.

Admission to tonight’s game is FREE, so do get along and lend the lads your support if you can.

But if you can’t make it, as always, we’ll have live coverage of the game on our Twitter page HERE.
