Glory maintain 100% start with hard-fought win

Susan Phonsongkham struck her second goal in as many games as Glory maintained their 100% start to the Liberty A-League season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at HBF Park.

Having opened her account in last weekend’s win over Western United, the livewire forward capped off a well-worked move with an emphatic finish early in the second half.

And the victory was no more than Glory deserved having created the better chances following a cagey opening 20 minutes.

Skipper Natasha Rigby was the first to threaten the Newcastle goal with a skidding cross-shot which flashed across the face of goal and moments later, a combination of goalkeeper Izzy Nino and a cluster of defenders prevented Jess Cowart from converting in a goalmouth scramble.

Melina Ayres did threaten late in the half for the Jets, but having survived that scare, Glory wasted no time in hitting the front after the restart.

It was Grace Jale who started the move, finding Millie Farrow with a clever reverse ball which allowed the English striker to drive into the box and eventually pick out Phonsongkham who rifled a shot into the bottom corner with unerring accuracy.

Phonsongkham then almost returned the favour, delivering a fine cross which Farrow met firmly, only for Nino to make an excellent block.

With the clock ticking down, the Jets threw bodies forward in a desperate bid to salvage something from the game, but with Cowart and Mihocic to the fore, the home defence held firm to seal the win.

Due to the international break, the Women will not return to action until November 4th when they travel to Canberra United.
