Glory and Roar share points at Macedonia Park

Morgan Aquino produced a superb penalty save as Glory fought out a 0-0 home draw with Brisbane Roar which was far more compelling than the scoreline suggests.

The Glory ‘keeper guessed right and pawed away Ayesha Norrie’s spot-kick in first-half stoppage-time and the home side almost claimed all three points late on as Millie Farrow and Susan Phonsongkham both went close.

The result leaves Glory in second spot on the Liberty A-League ladder, eight points behind leaders Melbourne City and four points clear of Western Sydney Wanderers who occupy the last finals position.

In humid conditions more reminiscent of Brisbane than Perth, it was the visitors who began more brightly, with Aquino denying Mia Corbin at point-blank range and the American striker also sending two other efforts narrowly wide.

Roar were then presented with an ideal opportunity to translate their pressure onto the scoreboard when home skipper Natasha Rigby inadvertently handled Sharn Freier’s cross in the box.

Former Glory midfielder Norrie took responsibility, but Aquino got the better of her to ensure that the two sides would head into the break locked at 0-0.

As the second half wore on, the women in purple began to look more threatening and were only denied the opener by some superb defending from Holly McQueen who somehow contrived to clear Farrow’s effort off the line after the English striker had latched onto a through-ball from Georgia Cassidy.

Then, in stoppage-time, two more chances presented themselves, but Phonsongkham was unable to keep her well-struck efforts on target and Roar survived to claim a share of the spoils.
