Perth Glory share top spot in the Hyundai A-League with Brisbane Roar after Sunday-s 2-1 win away to Melbourne Heart.
Two goals from marquee man Shane Smeltz made it two wins from two games for Perth Glory, here are the post-game reactions.
PERTH GLORY COACH IAN FERGUSON
“It’s only two games and we’ve had two wins but we’ve got to take each game as it comes, one game at a time.
“I know it’s an old cliche but that’s the way it’s got to be.
“Last year we went five unbeaten and a lot of people were tipping us to win the league.
“We sort of got carried away.
“This year I’ve tried to keep the boys’ feet on the ground.”
On the squad:
“I think we’ve got depth in the squad.
“Last year we could have went out there and been in the lead and then, all of a sudden, we get beat two-one.”
“It’s the quality of player that we’ve picked to come to Perth Glory.
“We’ve got great energy and mobility now in the team which is fantastic.”
Shane Smeltz:
“It wasn’t a great game, there wasn’t a lot of chances and that’s the difference that Smeltz can make.
“He had two chances today and scored the two of them.”
The penalty:
“I was a bit worried about ‘Coyney’ because he’s a little bit undercooked at the moment.
“I felt as though he needed more games before we could throw him in there, but he’s an old warrior.
“He reads the game well and he’ll get Van Den Brink around about him and Todd Howarth around about him with good energy and good pace.
“I was delighted, he marshalled the defence really well.”
With a goal in each half, Smeltz also broke more Hyundai A-League records with his 50th and 51st goals in the competition.
Here is what the star striker had to say about his first Perth Glory goals.
SHANE SMELTZ
“I am pleased I-ve hit the 50 mark and I-ve scored in my second game for my new club and it-s contributed to another three points.
“Collectively, I thought it was another good performance again. It was a different kind of performance to last week but that-s what you need if you are going to do something in this league. Different games are going to throw up different challenges.
“The pleasing thing is that we-ve won and it was on the road.”
