In front of another large and vocal Saturday night crowd, the women in purple found themselves trailing at the break after Dylan Holmes fired the Reds into the lead late in the first half.

But Grace Jale slotted home her third goal of the season shortly after the restart and four minutes from time, Phonsongkham also took her tally for the campaign to three when she bagged what proved to be the winner with a typically composed finish.

Adelaide came into the game still looking for their first win of the campaign and they were fortunate not to go behind early as goalkeeper Annalle Grove was forced to block an effort from Jale and the New Zealand international headed narrowly wide moments later.

Grove would go on to foil Jale once again and produce an even better save to keep out a long-range strike from Hana Lowry, but by this stage, the Reds had begun creating chances of their own.

Former Glory forward Alana Jancevski twice tested Morgan Aquino with well-struck efforts and it was from her corner that United snatched the lead in the shadows of half time as Holmes prodded the ball home at the far post.

The hosts almost responded in first-half stoppage-time, Lowry forcing Grove into a stunning, one-handed save, but there was nothing the overworked Adelaide ‘keeper could do to prevent Jale from restoring parity six minutes after the restart.

Lowry’s superb long ball sent Phonsongkham scampering away down the right and she duly supplied a perfectly-weighted cross which Jale converted at the far post.

Again the Reds responded well, this time Holmes and Nanako Sasaki both wasting good chances to put their side back in front.

And they were made to pay for their profligacy right at the death when substitute Grace Johnston fed Phonsongkham and she jinked her way into the box before lashing an angled shot past Grove.
