The home skipper struck with only nine minutes on the clock, driving home from just inside the box to round off some neat approach play and Glory could have won by a more convincing margin, with Sarah O’Donoghue going close either side of the break.
The Jets piled on some late pressure, but just as they did in their previous home victories, Glory showed great resolve and tenacity to maintain the clean sheet and maintain their strong Finals challenge.
On a warm summer’s evening in the West, Glory turned up the heat immediately by taking an early lead.
The move was a slick one, Susan Phonsongkham finding O’Donoghue who marked her return to the starting side by cutting the ball back neatly for Dalton whose low shot was too good for Anna Leat in the Newcastle goal.
Glory came close to doubling that lead when only a despairing punch from Leat prevented a Georgia Cassidy corner from swinging its way into the net and although Sophe Hoban did force Teresa Morrissey to make a couple of regulation saves at the other end, it was generally the hosts who looked the more likely.
O’Donoghue was in the thick of the action and almost grabbed herself a goal just after the half-hour mark, picking Natasha Prior’s pocket on the halfway line and racing clear on goal, only to rush her shot and allow Leat to make the save.
1-0 very nearly became 2-0 eight minutes after the restart, Emma Tovar finding Phonsongkham who cut inside and delivered a low cross which O’Donoghue clipped just wide of the far post.
Josie Allan responded almost immediately for the Jets, forcing Morrissey into a fine save with a snapshot from inside the box and the Glory ‘keeper also blocked a late header from substitute Haley Johnson.
But Stephen Peters’ well-drilled side by and large kept Newcastle at arm’s length in the final quarter and were good value for another hard-fought win in front of an appreciative and vocal home crowd.
