ALW Match Wrap: Chances galore, but Glory and Sydney battle to stalemate draw

Glory and Sydney FC somehow fought out a 0-0 draw at Sam Kerr Football Centre on Wednesday evening despite raining a cumulative 35 shots down on each other over the course of helter-skelter ALW Round 10 clash.

As well as chances galore, both sides had several strong penalty appeals turned down and there was also a late melee prompted by a clash between Grace Johnston and Riley Tanner.

The result leaves Glory one point outside the top six ahead of a trip to Wellington on February 6th.

The very notion of the game finishing goalless looked incredibly unlikely as both sides set about attacking with gusto right from the off.

Izzy Dalton set the tone inside the opening five minutes with a long-range effort which was blocked by Heather Hinz in the Sydney goal and the chances flowed at either end from there.

Jodi Ulkekul tested Teresa Morrissey after wriggling free in the box before Rola Badawiya went close for Glory, forcing Hinz to make a smart stop low to her right.

Sydney’s response was an effort from Riley Tanner which flashed across the face of goal and Abbey Lemon was similarly off target at the visitors just about shaded the opening 25 minutes.

But Glory seized the initiative close to half time as Susan Phonsongkham sent in a free-kick which Hinz palmed over the bar and during a subsequent goalmouth scramble, the Sydney defence somehow managed to prevent the ball from finding its way over the line.

If anything, the contest became even more transitional after the break as Morrissey tipped a Tanner shot over the bar and then saved from substitute Mackenzie Hawkesby.

Glory thought they had earned a penalty when Bronte Trew went down in the box, but that appeal was waved away and moments later, Rola Badawiya fizzed an effort narrowly wide.

By this time, Natalie Tathem had made a very welcome return from her ACL injury off the bench and her introduction seemed to spur the hosts onto redouble their efforts.

Badawiya was the next to seemingly be upended in the box, but again referee Page Malau-Aduli was unmoved and less than 60 seconds later, Emma Tovar drew another excellent save from Hinz.

The Sydney ‘keeper then produced a fine double block to thwart Ella Lincoln and Phonsongkham shortly before the Sky Blues had their own penalty appeal rejected when Tanner looked to have been impeded.

And there was still time for Tanner and Johnston to become involved in a heated exchange after the Panamanian international appeared to pull the latter’s hair, prompting players from both sides to engage in some prolonged push and shove.
