The women in purple were looking to secure what would have been just the club’s second win in 16 away meetings with United, but those hopes took a huge dent almost immediately as the hosts raced out to a 2-0 lead inside the opening eight minutes.
ALW legend Michelle Heyman claimed the opener, Emma Robers nodded in the second and any realistic chance of a Glory comeback was snuffed out 13 minutes into the second half when Bethany Gordon fired in Canberra’s third.
Seeking a first win of the campaign, Antoni Jagarinec’s side gave their vociferous supporters plenty to shout about right from the off as they came flying out of the blocks.
Heyman made the initial breakthrough after just three minutes, showing her predatory instincts by sliding in at the far post to clip home a low cross from Josie Aulicino past Alyssa Dall’Oste.
And the hosts swiftly doubled their advantage as Robers met a Gordon free-kick with a looping header which found the net via the underside of the bar.
To their credit, Glory’s immediate response to a torrid opening ten minutes was to create a gilt-edged chance for Charli Wainwright, but the midfielder failed to find the net with a free header from Emma Tovar’s corner.
With a knee injury ruling out skipper Izzy Dalton, Rola Badawiya took the arm band and almost hauled her side back into the contest on the half-hour mark, turning Gordon on the edge of the box only to drag her subsequent shot wide of the mark.
Having finished the first half on the front foot, Glory desperately needed to start the second in a similar fashion, but instead they found themselves 3-0 down before the hour-mark.
This time Heyman turned provider, combining neatly with Gordon who drilled into the bottom corner from just inside the area.
Glory Head Coach Stephen Peters duly cleared his bench in the final quarter, handing a debut to local product Olivia Wood in the process, but for all their endeavours, the visitors were unable to find their way through a robust home defence.
