ALW In Focus: Susan Phonsongkham

Ben Gilby continues his series profiling our Ninja A-League squad with an in-depth feature on gifted forward Susan Phonsongkham.

Before unfortunately suffering a foot injury which continues to keep her on the sidelines, Susan Phonsongkham played a key role in Glory’s ongoing charge for the ALW Finals.

The tenacious attacker, now in her fifth season with the club, was a constant thorn in the side of Glory’s opponents, linking up brilliantly with her teammates and twice getting on the score sheet herself.

Speaking before she picked up her injury, she reflected positively on the campaign.

“I think it’s going quite well,” she said.

“It’s been nice to get into the groove of things and I’m pretty happy with how I’m going.

“We have an amazing group of players in our front third and midfield, we connect really well in games and have been together for a couple of seasons now.

“Georgia [Cassidy] is literally unreal, so it’s nice to be playing with her, both on the pitch and in training.

“She wows me with everything she does; her turns, her long balls, her short game balls.”

Having a regular run of games with consistently high levels of performance is rich reward for Phonsongkham who has had to traverse a career punctuated by a number of serious injuries.

“Every injury isn’t easy,” she said, “but I’ve just been having bad luck with them throughout my career.

“It has taught me different things, like enjoying the simple things that I probably wouldn’t be able to do otherwise during the season, which is spending time with family.”

Spending five seasons with a single club is something of a rarity in the ALW where most contracts are only for one or two years and 25-year-old Phonsongkham has enjoyed putting roots down here in the West.

“I absolutely love this club,” she said.

“I just want to see us do well.

“I’d love to stay long term with the club.

“Perth is home now; my mum has moved here and I love the lifestyle outside of football.

“The beaches are nice and the sun is out every single day, so that helps.

“I love Perth!”

Glory return to ALW action this coming Saturday (21st March) when Finals rivals Central Coast Mariners will provide the opposition in the annual Pride Round clash at Sam Kerr Football Centre.

Kick-off is at 2pm, grab your tickets HERE.
