A win for the Sky Blues would have seen them climb to third place, but Adam Griffiths’ men went toe-to-toe with their hosts right from the off in what proved to be an absorbing, hard-fought contest.
The result means that Glory have now lost just one of their last seven outings and there was plenty to like about the energy, resilience and determination of their performance on a ground where the club has not tasted victory since 2016.
While Sydney FC may have had more to play for, it was Glory who were the more purposeful side for much of the opening 45 minutes.
Combining a high, hard press with quick rotations when in possession, the visitors asked plenty of questions of the home defence, even if they were not quite able to seriously test goalkeeper Harrison Devenish-Meares.
Nicholas Pennington and Jaiden Kucharski were prominent in most of Glory’s better moments and they combined for their side’s best chance before the break, the latter pulling the ball back from the right, only for the former to seemingly lose his footing as he prepared to pull the trigger with the goal gaping.
Sydney did eventually manage to create some chances of their own, Al Hassan Toure forcing Matt Sutton into a smart save after getting away down the right and Brian Kaltak heading off the line during a subsequent goalmouth scramble.
But Glory continued to ask questions at the other end and forged the final opportunity of a lively and occasionally fractious first half when Kucharski found a pocket of space on the edge of the box and rifled a shot narrowly wide of the target.
Sydney predictably came flying out of the blocks at the start of the second period, with Sutton forced to make a save from Ben Garuccio and Piero Quispe firing the loose ball over the bar.
The Glory ‘keeper was then called into action again, this time to foil Apostolos Stamatelopoulos superbly with his legs, before Toure got in behind once again, only to drag his shot wide.
Having weathered that early storm, Glory began to find a way back into the game and could have hit the front had Charbel Shamoon or Sebastian Despotovski done better with the chances that fell their way.
Both sides continued to throw everything at each other in the latter stages, but neither could find a winner and Glory will now switch their focus to next Saturday’s final game of the season against Brisbane Roar at HBF Park.
