ALM Match Preview: “We’re going to embrace the challenge and we’re going to excel” – Griff

Glory Head Coach Adam Griffiths believes that his charges are relishing the prospect of going toe-to-toe with an abrasive Brisbane Roar side at HBF Park on Friday evening (kick-off at 6:45pm, tickets available HERE).

The men in purple will be out to make it back-to-back wins on home soil having swept Central Coast Mariners aside 3-0 last weekend.

And although fifth-placed Brisbane have developed a reputation for physicality and something of a siege mentality this season, Griffiths is backing his side to stay very much on the front foot.

“They [Brisbane] deserve to be where they are,” he said.

“They play a different style of football, but it’s an effective style of football and they’re good at it.

“We’ve got to match that and continue to improve on how we want to play and take that game to them.

“We’re going to embrace the challenge and we’re going to excel.

“We’ve been regrouping and re-setting and getting ourselves prepared for this game.

“We focus everything on ourselves, every game.

“We’ve been focused on what makes us and continuing to turn Perth Glory into a winning team.

“We do the 80-20 rule where we focus 80% on us and 20% on Brisbane.”

The Head Coach went on to discuss how motivated the playing group are to reward the Members and fans who are poised to turn out in big numbers once again on Friday.

“Perth Glory has been starved of success, so winning games will obviously increase crowds and get people talking,” he said.

“We want to continue on that trajectory and we’re doing everything possible to make that happen.

“You have to have sustained success and that’s the objective.

“I think we’re improving as a collective and that’s something that we have to continue if we’re going to keep moving up the ladder.”

In terms of early team news, meanwhile, Griffiths hinted that a number of the club’s walking wounded could come into selection contention for this Round 13 match-up.

“A couple of players are coming back to training,” he said, “and then we’ll make a decision as to whether they’re ready to step into the squad or not.”

Attacking duo Jaiden Kucharski and Seb Despotovski are closing in on a return to full fitness, while Zach Lisolajski made a welcome return from injury last weekend, but Will Freney (hip), Callum Timmins and Brandon O’Neill (both calf) are expected to again be unavailable.

Roar come into Friday’s game two points above Glory on the ladder but looking to snap a run of three consecutive defeats in which they have failed to muster a single goal.

Michael Valkanis’ side have won twice on their travels this season, at Central Coast and Adelaide and will be out to secure maximum points at HBF Park for the 12th time in what will be their 27th overall visit.

The four most recent of those meetings between the two sides in WA have produced an even split of two wins apiece.

In terms of players to look out for, former Glory man Henry Hore has again been a regular starter in midfield, Justin Vidic has found the net three times and former England Under-21 international Chris Long has also shown glimpses of his quality up front.

Roar were dealt a blow earlier this week, however, when talismanic Irish midfielder Jay O’Shea was ruled out for a month by an ankle injury.
