Academy Wrap: First Team downed by Gulls, U18s clinch title

The senior PGFC Academy teams enjoyed mixed fortunes over the weekend, with the First Team suffering a 5-1 home defeat at the hands of Sorrento FC, while the Under-18s sealed their league title with an emphatic win and the Under-20s took another major step towards also being crowned Premiers.

The action began on Friday evening when Ciaran Bramwell gave the First Team the best possible start by heading home a Lucas Cook cross with 15 minutes on the clock.

That was as good as it got for Kenny Lowe’s side, however, as the Gulls hit back ten minutes later via an opportunistic long-range effort from Chris Jackson and then proceeded to seize control of the game.

Dean Cummings drilled home from just inside the box to send the visitors into the break 2-1 ahead and a deflected Tim Hill extended their lead midway through the second half.

The scoreline then blew out in the final few minutes as Jackson forced home a Joe Tweats cross to make it 4-1 and Jordan Brown headed past Adrian Sinagra in stoppage-time.

It was a different story at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday, however, as the Under-18s sealed the league title with two games to spare courtesy of a 5-0 win over second-placed Sorrento.

Royie Rahamim, Khoa Ngo, GJ Prinsloo, Corey Sutherland and Solomon Poletti shared the goals in another dominant display from Will Cruz’s side.

The Under-20s are now within touching distance of emulating the 18s title triumph after cruising home 6-0.

Christian Belladonna helped himself to two of the goals, with Timon Bonelli, Matt George, GJ Prinsloo and Danny Douglas also on the scoresheet.

All three teams return to NPL WA action on Saturday when Perth Red Star will provide the opposition at Crazy Domains Stadium at Hartfield Park.

The Under-18s are in action at 2pm, followed by the Under-20s at 4pm and the First Team at 6pm.
