Academy Latest: Attention switches to Cup action after Bayswater blank

The PGFC Academy Under-18s and Under-20s will look to get back to winning ways in the State Cup this weekend after they, along with the First Team, tasted defeat against Bayswater City in the NPL WA on Saturday.

The younger age groups had been downed 1-0 (18s) and 3-0 (20s) respectively before the First Team found themselves involved in a thrilling, roller-coaster of a contest which ended in a 5-2 victory for the hosts at Frank Drago Reserve.

City hit the front inside the opening three minutes as Cameron Teece’s shot was deflected past Liam Coyne, but Glory reacted well to the early setback and were soon level as Samuel Barry cushioned a Royie Rahamim cross into the path of Seb Despotovski who applied an emphatic finish.

And Glory then hit the front as Despotovski returned the favour by teeing up Barry whose angled shot found the bottom corner.

That was as good as it got for John Walmsley’s side, however, as City roared back in the second half, levelling almost immediately after the restart when Teece headed in from a long throw.

20 minutes from time, Jon Stynes made it 3-2 from the penalty spot and substitute Chris Jackson added two goals late in the piece to render the final scoreline a little harsh on the visitors.

The Academy’s Junior NPL WA teams enjoyed better fortunes, meanwhile, with the U-13s, U-14s, U-15s and U-16s all getting the better of South West Phoenix:

U-13s v South West Phoenix W 5-1
U-14s v South West Phoenix W 3-1
U-15s v South West Phoenix W 5-1
U-16s v South West Phoenix W 5-0

The First Team will have a chance to recuperate this weekend as the NPL WA takes a break, but the 18s and 20s will both be in State Cup action against Sorrento FC at Percy Doyle Reserve on Saturday.

The 18s kick-off at 10:30am and the 20s at 12:45pm.

Do get along and support the lads if you can!
