Academy First Team’s Night Series campaign ends in thrilling semi-final

The PGFC Academy First Team’s involvement in this year’s NPL WA Night Series competition came to an end on Sunday when they were edged out 4-3 by Sorrento FC in a thrilling semi-final clash at Percy Doyle Reserve.

Seb Despotovski gave Joe Heath’s side the perfect start with a superb goal inside the opening three minutes, before the newly-promoted Gulls levelled things up through former Glory Academy midfielder Andrew Maranta and then took the lead via an effort from Phoenix Lee on the hour-mark.

Glory soon restored parity when Khoa Ngo rifled home, but Steven McGarry’s men duly pulled away as Clay Gibbs and Dean Cummings hit the net and although Max Naylor reduced the arrears late on to set up a tense finale, it was not to be for the valiant youngsters.

Sorrento will meet Stirling Macedonia in Saturday’s Final following the latter’s upset win over last season’s treble winners, Olympic Kingsway.

The new NPL WA season is set to get underway for the PGFC Academy senior sides on Saturday 15 March when Fremantle City will provide the opposition at the Sam Kerr Football Centre.
