Academy First Team stung by second-half goals

Despite creating the vast majority of the chances, the PGFC Academy suffered a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Inglewood United on Saturday.

Amidst blustery conditions at Crazy Domains Stadium, the hosts went closest to opening the scoring in a hard-fought first-half, Ciaran Bramwell firing narrowly wide from just inside the box on the half-hour and Jayden Leader seeing his effort cleared off the line in the shadows of half-time.

Glory continued to press after the break, Jacob Young heading a Trent Ostler corner over the bar and Tyler Vecchio surging into the box from the left flank before bending a shot centimetres wide of the the far post.

Totally against the run of play, however, it was United who hit the front midway through the half, Hermon Michaele punishing some hesitant defending with a close-range finish.

Glory’s response was to strike the woodwork twice in the space of ten minutes, firstly through Ostler whose angled shot thumped against the underside of the bar before bouncing back out and then via Lucas Cook’s long-range effort.

To reinforce the impression that it was not going to be the hosts’ day, Inglewood duly struck with another sucker punch ten minutes from time, this time substitute Ngendakumana heading home his fifth goal of the season.

There was better news for the Under-20s who made it 11 wins from 11 games courtesy of a 3-1 victory, a result mirrored by the Under-18s who also continue to occupy top spot in their division.

All three teams return to NPL WA action on Saturday with a trip to Floreat Athena (U18s at 11am, U20s at 1pm, First Team at 3pm), but ahead of that, the Under-20s face Sorrento FC in the State Reserves Cup Semi-Finals at Percy Doyle Reserve on Wednesday evening (kick-off at 7.15pm).
