Academy First Team share spoils with Gwelup

The PGFC Academy First Team remain within touching distance of the NPL WA top four following a hard-fought 0-0 draw with Gwelup Croatia at the Croatian Sporting Complex on Saturday.

Although neither side managed to find the net, there was certainly no shortage of goalmouth action to keep what was a vocal crowd entertained.

Adrian Sinagra got down well to prevent Daniel Fachney from firing the hosts into an early lead and then got his body behind a curling free-kick from Kade Fearnall moments later.

At the other end, meanwhile, Adam Zimarino saw his low effort blocked by Roy McKain in the home goal and Jayden Leader flashed a cross-shot centimetres wide of the far post.

Shortly before the break, Sinagra was again called into action, this time foiling the lively Faichney with a spectacular, fingertip save.

The chances continued to flow as the second half wore on, Zimarino drawing a save from McKain at the near post on the hour-mark, Aiden Coyne and substitute Andrew Maranta going both going close in the space of a minute and Gwelup’s Mohammad Rezai skying over the bar having been teed up by Sebastian Da Silva.

Da Silva was then unable to convert the final opportunity of a lively contest, Sinagra showing great reflexes once again as he prevailed in a one-on-one situation.

In the day’s other games, meanwhile, the Under-18s and Under-20s both consolidated their positions at the top of their respective tables, securing emphatic 7-0 and 7-2 victories.

All three sides return to NPL WA action on Saturday by taking on Bayswater City at Frank Drago Reserve.

The Under-18s get underway at 11am, followed by the Under-20s at 1pm and the First Team at 3pm.
