Academy First Team claim points in another thriller

The PGFC Academy First Team enhanced their growing reputation as this season’s great entertainers in the NPL WA by securing a thrilling 5-4 win over Cockburn City at Lark Hill on Saturday.

A total 26 goals had been scored in the five games John Walmsley’s side had played heading into the weekend and by half-time in Round 6, that tally had risen to 30.

Jayden Gorman’s superb, swerving, left-foot effort fired Glory into an early lead which was swiftly doubled as Daniel Bennie got in behind the City defence and squared for Josh Anasmo to tap in.

Bennie then claimed another assist, this time teeing up James Overy to make it 3-0, but the visitors gained a foothold in the contest on the stroke of half-time when Charlie Garnham turned neatly in the box and picked out the bottom corner.

City carried that momentum into the early stages of the second half and further reduced the arrears courtesy of a Friday Zico’s long-range effort, only for Glory to respond with a close-range finish from Joel Anasmo who was the beneficiary of Gorman’s fine run and cross.

Again Cockburn responded, this time through Jesse Lazzaro’s acrobatic overhead kick, before Gorman again teed up Joel Anasmo to make it 5-3.

A second yellow card to Lucas Cook for taking too long over a throw-in set up a tense finale, but although City did pull one back from a 97th-minute corner, Glory were not to be denied the win which propelled them up to third in the table.

The victory for the First Team completed a clean sweep on the day, with the Under-18s maintaining their 100% start to the season via an emphatic 8-0 win and the Under-20s getting home 5-0.

All three sides return to action on Saturday (6th May) with a trip to Perth RedStar.

The Under-18s will get things underway at RedStar Arena (ECU) at 11am, followed by the Under-20s at 1pm and the First Team at 3pm.
