It’s fair to say that our travelling supporters, plus the legendary Victorian Association of Glory Fans, have enjoyed many of the club’s recent visits to AAMI Park.
The turnout in the away bay seems to get bigger by the year and there have been plenty of sweet victories which have been celebrated long and hard into the Victorian night.
But the story during the early seasons of the Hyundai A-League was a very different one.
Of Glory’s seven away clashes with Melbourne Victory during the first five seasons of the competition, not one yielded a win.
Yes, there were three valuable draws, but there were also four defeats, two of which saw the visitors thumped painfully 4-0 and 6-2.
The winless drought was finally broken in August 2010 when Glory stunned a Victory side that had been Grand Finalists the previous season.
Well over 17,000 fans rolled into AAMI Park for what was Victory’s first appearance at the venue and most of those present would have expected the navy-and-whites to bag the chocolates with ease.
Dave Mitchell’s men had other ideas, however and grabbed the lead when Jamie Harnwell forced the ball home from close-range in the 23rd minute.
Early in the second half, Mile Sterjovski found the net from just outside the box and from there, Glory dug in to preserve their hard-earned lead, helped by some fine saves from a man who would go on to serve the hosts in the future, Tando Velaphi.
Come the final whistle, Kevin Muscat and Grant Brebner were apoplectic with rage, Adriano Pellegrino’s post-match grin was wider than the Yarra and an historic win was in the bag.
