McKenna brace helps Glory retain Challenge Cup

Leticia McKenna struck twice and Lexie Moreno and Caitlin Doeglas also found the net as Glory retained the annual Challenge Cup with a comfortable 4-0 win over the Gold Fields WA State Team at Percy Doyle Reserve.

Bobby Despotovski’s side made light of the blustery conditions to produce a dominant performance, with the result never in doubt after Moreno and Doeglas’ efforts established a 2-0 lead within the opening seven minutes.

Moreno opened the scoring with a well-struck effort from the edge of the box which flashed into the bottom corner, before the lively Tia Stonehill picked out Doeglas whose composed finish doubled her side’s lead.

There was a rare scare for the women in purple in the 18th minute when Eliza Campbell was forced into action to tip Tessa De Leo’s long-range free-kick onto the bar, but that was as close as the State Team were to come to claiming a foothold in the game.

Having been introduced from the bench at half time along with younger sister Tijan, McKenna wasted no time in making her mark as she made it 3-0 with a dipping effort from wide out on the left.

And in the 66th minute, the 17-year-old found the target once again, this time surging across the top of the box before angling a pinpoint strike into the bottom corner.

With the result very much in the bag, Glory comfortably saw out the final quarter of the game and went close on several occasions to adding a fifth goal.

The women will now continue their pre-season preparations ahead of the new Westfield W-League campaign which gets underway with an away trip to Canberra United on Sunday 17 November.
