Under-20s eyeing Glorious treble

The PGFC Academy Under-20s are targeting a unique treble this weekend when they face Perth SC in the NPL WA Under-20 Top Four Cup Final at Inglewood United’s Perth Plasterboard Centre Stadium (kick-off at 12.15pm).

The youngsters have already enjoyed a remarkable season, losing just one game en route to securing the league title by a margin of 11 points and also retaining the Belt Up State League Reserves Cup with victory over Cockburn City.

Securing a third piece of silverware would be the icing on the cake and Coach Terry McFlynn has been pleased with the way his charges have approached the build-up to Saturday’s game.

“Training has been excellent,” he said.

“The reason the lads play football is to play in these big games and they’re relaxed and looking forward to it.

“The boys have worked hard all season. Richard Garcia and Steven McGarry got them into a wonderful position and I just came in at the back end.

“For us, we approach every game on its own merits whether it’s a Cup Final or a regular league game.

“It’s about the development of the kids and seeing how they handle different situations individually and collectively.

“Saturday is a Grand Final occasion and a situation that some of them might never have been in before, so we’ll see how they handle it.”

While acknowledging the threat posed by Perth SC, the only side to defeat Glory during the regular season, McFlynn insisted that his side have continued to concentrate very much upon themselves ahead of the Cup Final showdown.

“Perth SC have done very well across all three grades this season and congratulations to them for that,” he said.

“We have looked at the opposition, but as we do every week, we’ve just focused upon ourselves and our own processes and structures.

“We just want all the boys and their families to enjoy the day.”

It’s set to be a thrilling day of football at Inglewood on Saturday, with the action getting underway at 10am when Perth SC and Stirling Lions will meet in the Under-18s Final.

Next up is the Under-20s clash at 12.15pm, followed by the senior Final at 3pm in which Inglewood United will take on back-to-back league champions, Perth SC.

Admission is just $10 on the gate and we’d love to see as many of our members and fans as possible getting along to Perth Plasterboard Stadium to take in all three games and show their support for the local game.
