Five popular Perth Glory stars will celebrate Australia Day with fans at the Town Of Bassendean’s annual fireworks event at Ashfield Reserve on Thursday.
Captain Rostyn Griffiths, Vice-Captain Andy Keogh, defenders Dino Djulbic and Josh Risdon as well as former captain Richard Garcia will be flying the flag as ambassadors for Australia Day WA.
“It’s quite an honour really” Griffiths said who was born in Stoke-on-Trent in England.
“I think football epitomises the essence of multi-culturalism and I think, that’s what Australia is in so many ways. It’s a fusion of culture and food and different people and it’s what I love about living here” he said.
Traditionally Griffiths and his family would go to the Swan River to watch the fireworks and enjoy the evening.
“That may have to change this year but we’ll see how we go. The boys and I are looking forward to going to Ashfield (where the club’s NPL team is due to play later this year) to spread the gospel of the game and have a bit of fun” he said.
The Town of Bassendean expects 15-thousand people to attend the free event, which starts at 5pm, with fireworks commencing at 8pm finishing at 9.
Glory players will attend the event from 5-6.30pm.
Glory heads to Central Coast this weekend before it returns to nib Stadium on February 4 for a match against Newcastle Jets
