Retro Corner – Return of the Trav

Wednesday’s friendly fixture against Adelaide United got us thinking about connections between Glory and the Reds, of which there are quite a few.

Players to have featured for both clubs, including the likes of Adam Hughes, Fabio Ferreira, Antony Golec and Scott Jamieson, but in terms of impact made on either side of the border, Travis Dodd is the name that jumps out.

Dodd remains second in Adelaide’s all-time Hyundai A-League appearances list with 137 and he made a further 48 for Glory after arriving in 2011.

24 of those came during his first season here in the West when Glory did, of course, power their way to the Grand Final for which the twice-capped Socceroo was named in the starting eleven.

He would eventually score nine times for Glory, taking his career A-League tally to 39, but it wasn’t just on the field that Dodd made an impression.

From his legendary bromance with fellow-former-Red Jamieson, to his regular, tongue-in-cheek feature in the matchday programme, he kept us royally entertained.

So it should come as no surprise that when we asked him to caption the photos below, he did so in his own, inimitable style…

Travis Dodd and Scott Jamieson

“Jamo was effectively like my third child when we were together at Glory. We still speak every other day rather than every day like we used to, but he’d still be lost without me as his life guru. Occasionally he likes to try and engage in some Twitter banter which invariably ends with me crushing him. You have to admire his perseverance, though.”

Travis Dodd selfie

“I really felt for my old mate McGarry here. He jumped in for the selfie, but the guy pushed him aside and said he was only interested in fully-fledged Socceroos who had scored on debut against global powerhouse teams. Stevie took it well in fairness.”

Travis Dodd v Kuwait

“Did someone mention international debuts? Well, in that case, yes, I did score and provide an assist against one of world football’s greatest ever teams, Kuwait, back in 2006!  Apparently you can find both of them on YouTube, but I haven’t watched the clips since this morning, so can’t confirm that.”

Travis Dodd v-neck

“I’m renowned for being something of a style icon within the football and, indeed, the wider community. Jamo rushed out and bought a dozen plunging v-neck tops after he saw this picture, but let himself down by wearing them with shell-suit pants. Hideous!”

As always, we’d love to get your memories and tales of Trav, as it were.
