Malaysia Tour Diary – Day One

The latest goings-on from the club’s Malaysian Tour…

Day One

Having begun the day braving a wild winter storm en route to Perth Airport, the tour party ended it in similarly wet, if altogether warmer conditions, at the splendidly-appointed Waterfront Hotel in Kuching.

A crack of dawn flight, the logistical challenge of ensuring that half a tonne of luggage reached the correct destination and a generous helping of turbulence on both legs of the journey combined to leave the majority of the group feeling more than a touch weary.

Following the recovery session in the hotel pool, an early night was high on the agenda for most, with a wander along the adjacent riverfront walk all but ruled out by a dramatic electrical storm.

The river in question, the Sarawak, frames perfectly the striking Sarawak State Legislative Building which lies opposite the hotel, along with the historic Fort Margherita.

Tomorrow will, of course, reveal more of Glory’s home for the next week, but with a double training session planned, the players won’t have much time to explore their new surroundings.

Given that the first game of the tour is now less than 48 hours away, it will be straight down to business for the 26 players and 12 coaching staff.

And with the temperature forecast to hit 34 degrees and the humidity level to pass the 80% mark, it promises to be a sharp introduction to the realities of playing football in this part of the world.
