A glorious commitment

A major off-season recruiting drive that has netted some big name recruits to Perth had a sense of reality as the club’s big four signings all gathered in Western Australia for the first time on Sunday.

A major off-season recruiting drive that has netted some big name recruits to Perth had a sense of reality as the club-s big four signings all gathered in Western Australia for the first time on Sunday.

The key quartet of Mile Sterjovski, Jacob Burns, Branko Jelic and Andy Todd arrived in Perth ready to pull on the purple shirt and play their part in a glory revival under the stewardship of club owner Tony Sage.

After two seasons as a co-owner Mr Sage took full control of the club in February 2009 and quickly committed his full resources to returning Perth to a powerhouse club. The results have been spectacular with two English Premier League teams coming to town to play the Glory and a squad full of stars set to take Perth into the finals for the first time.

The arrival of the club-s big signings have come at a perfect time with the Glory-s pre-season clash against English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night at Members Equity Stadium.

While nothing is guaranteed on the football pitch Mr Sage is confident his investment will reap rewards for both the club and the code in Western Australia.

“It certainly is a risk financially but I think football will continue to gain prominence with a renewed interest in Perth Glory plus the next World Cup not far away,” he said.

“The risk is that the fans are apathetic, we need their support more than ever.

“Perth Glory was the shining light of Australian football and a key element was the support of the fans. We-ve done what we can and brought together a squad ready to do the job on the pitch, I hope that WA football supporters are ready to do their part off it.”

Perth Glory-s ‘Football Feast- kicks off on Friday 10 July against Wolves and continues on Wednesday 15 July when Fulham, including Socceroos star Mark Schwarzer, come to town. The Wednesday night match will be a double header with North Queensland Fury taking on Wolverhampton in the curtain raiser.
